Perhaps, but England were making small inroads, particularly after Kazakhstan lost Ostapenko in the 25th minute through injury. The first moment of true class from England arrived after 40 minutes and brought the goal that delivered calm. Lampard and Gerrard worked a short corner and Gerrard delivered an immaculate cross to the far post, where Barry was waiting to head in and redeem his wretched start. Kazakhstan looked aghast at the injustice of it all and worse was soon to follow for themBefore coach Bernd Storck could regroup his team at half-time, Gerrard's deflected chip caught goalkeeper Mokin off his line and his despairing hand could only palm the ball into the path of Heskey, who, from six yards out, doubled the lead, scoring his first competitive England goal since the 3-0 victory over Denmark in the 2002 World Cup.Capello's professional hand took control of the second half and Johnson broke down the right and delivered a cross for Rooney, whose shot was initially saved by Mokin. Yet as the rebound hung in the air, the striker produced a fine overhead kick that might have acted as a stunning finale had Lampard not later added his penalty. Ultimately it was all undemanding, yet none of this team will quickly forget their foray into Asia on the road to South Africa. That may be so, but against an incessant cacophony of drums and exhorting Kazakhstan fans, the likes of Rooney, Gerrard and Lampard suddenly seemed powerless to get the ball off a team ranked 137th in the England's worst offenders were Gareth Barry and Matthew Upson, who conceded possession with a regularity that belied their status. attempted to stem the charge.
